Kivu Express: moto taxi, courier and cargo in Rwanda

Part of Kivu Super App (kivu.site). Rides, parcels, food delivery and cargo from independent drivers.

Kivu Express is the transport section of Kivu Super App. A customer orders a moto ride, a courier for a small parcel or food, or a truck for cargo. The customer sets the pickup point and the destination and offers a fare. Drivers who are online nearby get a notification, and the first driver who accepts takes the order. During the trip the customer sees the driver on the map and can call or chat.

Drivers in Kivu Express are independent people, not Kivu staff. Kivu shows the order to drivers and connects the two sides; it does not own vehicles, does not hold the money and takes no commission from the customer or from the driver. The customer pays the driver directly, in cash or by Mobile Money.

How to use it, step by step

If you order a ride or a delivery

Open kivu.site, sign in with a free account and open Kivu Express. Stay on the "Order" tab.
Choose what you need: Taxi Moto, Small Package, Food Delivery or Heavy Truck.
Set the pickup point: search for the address, tap the map, or use the button for your current location. Then set the destination the same way.
The app shows the distance and suggests a fare. Raise or lower it with the plus and minus buttons, or type your own amount.
Tap "Next Details". Enter the contact phone for the driver and, if needed, a short note (for example "2 boxes, wait at the black gate").
Choose "Now" or "Later". For "Later", pick a date and time within the next 7 days.
Tap "Find Driver". Nearby online drivers get a notification. The order stays open for 30 minutes, and you can close the app and wait.
When a driver accepts, you get a notification. You see the driver's name, vehicle, plate number and phone. Call or chat if you need to explain something.
Before a ride, compare the plate number in the app with the plate on the vehicle. During the trip you see the driver on the map.
At the end, pay the driver the agreed fare directly, in cash or by Mobile Money. For Mobile Money, check the receiver's name before you confirm.
If something was wrong, open the trip and tap the report button.

If you want to earn as a driver

Open kivu.site, sign in with a free account, open Kivu Express and switch to the "Earn (Driver)" tab.
Fill in your driver card once: which orders you take (passengers, food and small parcels, cargo), your vehicle (moto, car, or truck/van), your plate number and your phone. Tap "Save".
Tap "Go online (4 h)" and allow location. Your position is sent once, at this moment.
While you are online, you get a notification when a new order appears near you. The list shows the type of order, the distance and the fare the customer offers. The pickup point and the destination are shown approximately until you accept.
If the fare suits you, tap "Accept order". If not, just leave it for another driver.
Go to the pickup point and tap "I have arrived". When the passenger or the parcel is with you, tap "Start trip".
At the destination, collect the fare from the customer in cash or by Mobile Money, and tap "Done".
If you cannot go after you have accepted, give the order back so another driver can take it.
Online mode ends after 4 hours. Tap "Go online" again after a trip or when you have moved to another area, so that the app knows where you are.

What it costs

Kivu Express is free for customers and for drivers. Kivu takes no commission from the fare, no fee per order and no fee for being online.

The only money that changes hands is the fare. The app suggests it from the distance, the customer can change it before sending the order, and the driver accepts or skips. The customer pays the driver directly, in cash or by Mobile Money.

There are no paid boosts or paid places in Kivu Express.
There is no bargaining inside the app for now: the driver sees the offered fare and takes the order or leaves it. If nobody accepts, send the order again with a higher fare.
Tolls, waiting time or loading help are not counted by the app. Agree on them with the driver by phone or chat before the trip starts.

What is good about it

No commission: the driver keeps the whole fare, so drivers have no reason to add a platform fee on top.
You set the fare yourself and see it before you send the order.
One section for four needs: a moto ride, a small parcel, food delivery and cargo by truck.
You can order ahead, up to 7 days, which is useful for cargo and moving.
After a driver accepts, you see the name, the vehicle, the plate number and the phone, and the driver's position on the map during the trip.
Before a driver accepts, drivers see only an approximate pickup point and destination, not your exact address.

The app is under 400 KB and opens in the phone browser, so it works on cheap phones and slow mobile internet.

What Kivu Express does not do

How Kivu earns from this section

Kivu earns nothing from Kivu Express today. There is no commission, no fee per order and no paid option in this section.

Kivu earns in other sections, where people and businesses can pay for optional boosts. Taking a percentage of fares is not planned: Kivu does not handle the money between customer and driver.

How do I order a moto taxi in Kigali?

Open kivu.site, sign in with a free account and open Kivu Express. Choose Taxi Moto, set the pickup point and the destination, check or change the fare, enter your contact phone and tap "Find Driver". Up to 20 online drivers within 5 km get a notification; the first who accepts takes the order. You see the driver's name, plate number and phone, follow the driver on the map and pay the driver directly.

How much does a ride or a delivery cost on Kivu Express?

You offer the fare yourself. The app suggests an amount in RWF from the distance, and you can raise or lower it before you send the order. A driver who agrees accepts it. Kivu adds no fee and takes no commission.

Can I send a parcel or order food delivery in Rwanda with Kivu?

Yes. Choose Small Package or Food Delivery in Kivu Express, set where to pick up and where to deliver, add a note for the driver and send the order. An independent driver nearby accepts it. You pay the driver directly. Kivu is not responsible for the parcel, so do not send valuable things with a driver you do not know.

Can I order a truck for cargo or for moving?

Yes. Choose Heavy Truck, set the two addresses and the fare, and pick "Now" or "Later" with a date and time up to 7 days ahead. Drivers who take cargo orders see it. Agree on loading help and any extras with the driver by phone or chat.

Is Kivu Express safe? Are drivers checked?

Drivers are not checked by Kivu: anyone can fill in a driver card, and Kivu does not verify licences or insurance. What helps: after a driver accepts you see the name, the vehicle, the plate number and the phone; you follow the trip on the map; and you can report a driver, after which the team can stop them from taking orders or ban the account. Compare the plate before you get on, and tell someone where you are going.

How do I pay the driver?

Directly, in cash or by Mobile Money (MTN MoMo or Airtel Money), at the end of the ride or on delivery. Kivu does not hold or transfer the fare. For Mobile Money, check the receiver's name before you confirm.

What happens if no driver accepts my order?

The order stays open for 30 minutes and then closes. Kivu is new, so there may be few drivers online near you. You can send the order again, possibly with a higher fare, or use your usual moto or courier.

How can I earn money as a driver with Kivu?
