Kivu Weather & Maps: today's weather, a street map and routes

Weather & Maps is a free part of Kivu Super App, an app made in Kigali, Rwanda. It lives on the Kivu Map screen, which has three tabs: "Map", "Events" and "Weather". The "Weather" tab shows the temperature now, the wind and the forecast for each hour of today in five cities: Kigali, Kampala, Nairobi, Mombasa and Dar es Salaam.

The "Map" tab is a street map. It shows where you are, pins of local events, and draws a road route from you to a point you tap. Kivu does not make the forecast or the map itself: the weather comes from Open-Meteo and the map from OpenStreetMap, both open sources. Use them as a helpful guide, not as an official warning service or a precise navigator.

How to use it, step by step

If you want to check the weather

Open kivu.site, sign in with a free account and tap "Events & Weather".
Tap the "Weather" tab.
Kigali opens first. Tap another city at the top: Kampala, Nairobi, Mombasa or Dar es Salaam.
Read the temperature now and the wind, then scroll the hours of today to the side.

If you want to find your way

Open "Events & Weather" and stay on the "Map" tab.
Tap the round location button and allow the browser to use your location. The map moves to you.
Tap the place on the map where you want to go. A pin appears; you can drag it.
Tap "Go Here" on the pin or the route button. A road route is drawn from you to the pin.
To go to an event, tap its pin on the map and use the buttons on the event card.

What it costs

Weather, the map and routes are free. There is no subscription and there are no adverts in them.

Nothing is sold in the weather or on the map itself. Organisers can pay to show an event higher; that is described on the Events page.

The map and the weather use mobile data when they load. Map parts you already looked at are kept on the phone for some days, so they load again without data.

What is good about it

Weather for Kigali and four big East African cities in one tap, without a separate weather app.
The street map, your position, events and a route are on one screen.

Kivu does not track your location in the background: on the map it is asked for only when you tap the location or route button.

The forecast covers only today, hour by hour. There is no forecast for the next days and no rain or storm alert.	The source, Open-Meteo, is named on this page. For official warnings follow Meteo Rwanda and the local authorities.
A forecast is an estimate. Rain in the hills can come when the forecast shows cloud only, and Kivu does not make or check the forecast.	Use it to plan the day, not for decisions about safety, such as travel on the lake or in the mountains.
The map has no search by address or by the name of a place. You find a place by moving the map.	Events and businesses in Kivu have their own lists, and most cards have a button that shows the place on a map.
The route is a simple road line from a free public routing service. It does not know traffic, closed roads or moto shortcuts, it does not speak, and sometimes the service does not answer.	Treat the route as a hint and ask local people or the driver. For a ride, order a driver in Kivu Express.
OpenStreetMap is made by volunteers. Small roads, new buildings and house numbers in Rwanda can be missing or out of date.	For an exact meeting place name a well-known landmark nearby.
The map shows events, but not all restaurants, hotels, clinics or banks of Kivu in one place.	Most of those sections have their own map with their own places.
Your position depends on the phone's GPS and can be off by tens of metres, more so indoors. Weather and routes do not work without internet.	Wait a few seconds outdoors for a better position. Map parts you opened before still show offline.

It does not make its own weather forecast or its own map.
It does not send weather alerts or warnings.
It does not show a forecast for the next days.
It does not give voice navigation or traffic information.
It does not search for addresses.
It does not track or save your location in the background.

How Kivu earns from this section

Kivu earns nothing from the weather, the map or routes. They are free and have no adverts.

On the same screen, organisers can buy paid promotion for an event; that is described on the Events page. Weather and the map are there so that the app is useful every day, also for visitors to Rwanda.

Which cities does Kivu show the weather for?

No. It shows the weather now and hour by hour for today only.

Where does Kivu get its weather and map from?

Can I use the Kivu map without internet?

Partly. The parts of the map you looked at in the last days are kept on the phone and open again offline. New areas, the weather and routes need internet.

Can Kivu show me the way to a place?

Yes, in a simple form. On the "Map" tab tap the location button, tap the place where you want to go and tap "Go Here": a road route is drawn. It has no voice and no traffic data, so treat it as a hint.

Does Kivu track my location?

No. On the map your location is asked for only when you tap the location or route button, and it is used to show you on the map. Kivu does not track location in the background.

Can I find a restaurant, a hotel or a bank on the Kivu map?

Not on this map: it shows events. Restaurants, hotels, clinics, salons and banks are in their own sections of Kivu, and most of them have their own map.
